Loch Chon (Kinlochard) to Frenich Farm
Saturday 9th May 2009
Loch Chon lies nestled in the middle of the scenic Balmacara Hills some 7 miles along the B829 road from Aberfoyle to Stronachlacher / Inversnaid and just west of the small village of Kinlochard at the western end of picturesque Loch Ard itself. As can be expected some times in Scotland the weather can be very unpredictable and it certainly was not in our favour today when the fourteen of the Bosco Wanderers arrived at the Forestry Commision C/park at the small peninsula of Ceann Mor on the s/eastern shore of the Loch. Our intended route today was to follow the water aqueduct which leads from Loch Katrine and runs along the southern shore of Loch Chon, construction of the aqueduct which runs for some for 35 miles mainly underground from Loch Katrine to Glasgow was started in 1855, officially opened by HRH Queen Victoria in 1859 and finally completed in 1860 at a cost of £668,000. On close inspection of the path though, it was decided to stick to the main logging track which would take us to our halfway point at Frenich Farm at the western end of the loch where a tea break could be had allowing us shelter from the appalling weather that had now descended on us from the surrounding hills. The route back to Ceann Mor C/park was made a little easier knowing that we would be rid of our now soaking wet gear and be greeted with some warm tea/coffee and lovely homemade fairy cakes from our very own "Lady of the Lake", yes "sherpa" Sadie McGarry.
