Mugdock Country Park
Saturday 4th April 2009
Thirteen of the Bosco Wanderers turned out today for this our second visit to Mugdock Park this year, and as usual for early April, the weather didn't look to promising when we left and headed over the Erskine Bridge for our starting point at the visitor centre in the park. Waterproof clothing was the order of the day as we made our way round this 750 acre park which was donated to the Central Region Council by Sir Hugh Fraser in the early 1980s so that the general public could enjoy not only the outstanding natural beauty it had to offer but also it's Historic past dating back as far as the 13th Centuary. Various famous people have been previous owners of the grounds including James Graham 1st Marquess of Montrose around 1612, bookseller and publisher John Smith 1724-1812 whose son James had Scottish architect and builder Alexander Ramsay design and build a new home within the grounds called Craigend House in Gothic Revival style in 1812 after the death of his father. Glasgow businessman William Wilson in 1949 turned part of the grounds into a zoo but it didn't last and was closed in 1954. This is just a few of the people who have been involved in making the park into what it is today, a place of recreation for everyone to enjoy.
If you haven't been there then GO!
Better still why not join us next time out not only at Mugdock Country Park but also on our fortnightly rambles to enjoy the free Scottish countryside in and around our local area. You will be made most welcome.
